ABOUT Ceilidh House
Ceilidh House was founded in 2003 as an educational and arts organization devoted to fostering an understanding of the Celtic heritage embedded in the culture of Maine. 48% of Maine's population now claims Celtic and/or British ancestry. Many of the earliest settlers, c. 1700-1800 were Scots and Ulster-Scots (aka Scots-Irish) farmers and merchants and Cornish fishermen. Irish immigrants followed, starting in 1820. People continue to settle in Maine from these and other Celtic lands up to the present day.
Ceilidh House intends, through concerts, workshops, lectures and classes, to promote an understanding & appreciation of the contribution these peoples have made to the Maine character. To this end Ceilidh House has hosted educational events and performances by internationally acclaimed artists from Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Canada, and the U.S. Ceilidh House maintains a roster of teachers for a variety of Celtic musical and language arts. Ceilidh House functions as a "university without walls", providing programs throughout the state. Our home office, ceilidh/session space & Celtic resource library are located in Pownal, Maine. Ceilidh House is a federal 501c3 non-profit organization and a non-profit corporation within the State of Maine. All donations are tax-deductible. |
